The Plot:

I'm dedicating this one for dog lovers. I only watched this movie because the director JOHN LAFIA, directed "Child's Play 2" and co-wrote the original. He directed this one as well.

And a strange portrayal of Max , a genetically enhanced guard dog. Played by a TIBETAN MASTIFF with its fur trimmed (usually the breed has more fur). KEVIN YAGHER helped with special make-up effects which are covered with computer effects from COMPOSITE IMAGE SYSTEMS.

The story centers around an ambitious TV reporter (Ally Sheedy) who breaks in and unleashes MAX. Without the drugs to keep him in control, the dog is a killer. He loves Lori, but hates the rest of the cast. Max kills a mailman, a mugger, and a lab technician, but no one under eighteen.

My favorite parts are when the dog climbs a tree like a jaguar and later when he camouflages himself like a chameleon. Oh, he also scares the dog catchers away. It may been better if they left the deleted scenes in. Still, a well done and cool movie!

Things I Learned From This Movie:

  • Genetic laboratories have bad security.
  • Genetically altered dogs can climb trees.
  • Genetically altered dogs can pee battery acid.
  • Genetically altered dogs naturally know what you are thinking.
  • Genetically altering a dog is legal, but genetically altering people is not!
  • Never drive fast when a DNA altered dog is attacking you.

Stuff To Watch For:

  • 5 mins - That's fast. Max killed one person already!
  • 14 mins - Poor security for a high tech lab.
  • 60 mins - Dog pees acid on a poor victim's face.
  • Ending Credits - Is there going to be a sequel? Max has a son!

  • Mailman: "Try something you son of a bitch."
  • Jarret: "We are not talking 'Man's Best Friend' here!"
  • Lori: (with Max) "Is this dog really a noble sacrifice. Benefiting his life to the betterment of mankind, or is he a victim of the $ 25,000,000 vivisection industry." (Max runs away) "....and this S*** doggy! Max."
  • Jarret: "Remember me? Where's my dog?".

In a movie full of strange surprises (acid for urine, super intelligence, etc.) this has to take the cake. Watch in amazement as Max easily scales the tree and then swallows a cat!

Good dog!

This movie is not worth five slime-drops. I'd give it two. Its entertaining and has some good scenes, the cat-eating scene being the best, but its no b-classic. Well, it does have Lance Henricksen. But I don't care: 2/5

I remember using this movie as a reference point for the definition of the Designated Hero Rule (that the hero can do no wrong simply because he or she is the hero, not for any particular heroic action or behavior).  Ally Sheedy's character is supposed to be the hero because she releases a VERY DANGEROUS animal from its medical experimentation lab.  Well all the death and violence that happens after this is Sheedy's characters fault, but we are supposed to root for this nitwit because she is the 'hero'.  Hell I was rooting for Henricksen from the get go and felt he was the true hero of the movie.  If they had gone with a Frankenstein tracking his creation down for the good of humanity slant then perhaps this movie would have been far better than it currently is (whihc isn't very, 2 slimes in my book).  I also felt it suffered too much from the kampy komedy contagion of the late 80's and early 90's (every horror movie had far too much funny business in it for my tastes).  I wanted a far nastier beast than what was found here.  Nonetheless, because of all the recent dog attack storeis, this movie (as well as Cujo) has been on my mind recently and I know I'm going to rent it for a good laugh sometime within the next few months.

Way to go Max, good doggy!

I've seen this on TBS about hundred times. Pretty stupid. Pretty cool. Didn't they keep making up new powers for the dog as the movie went on?

Hillarious! This is the funniest bad movie I've ever seen in my life. I saw this edited on the USA and I saw the comedy movie Friday. This movie was shown in Friday, too. In Friday, this guy has to get his dad the TV Guide while he's watching Man's Best Friend! He's making fun of the scene when the mailman shoots Max with water gun and both movies are really funny. Man's Best Friend was almost funnier than Friday, in my honest opinion. I was at my grandparents house while watching this. Me and grandfather was laughing hard on the scene when Max got mad and killed that parrot. I almost p**sed my pants while watching this scene. I might rent it so I can see it unedited. You should go watch it with your friends on some night because this movie hillarious! Though, I wouldn't give it 5 drops. I'd give it 3 instead even though it's a entertaining film. Get off your computer seat and rent it. NOW!!!!

Loved the movie!  I wish I had a dog like that.  Ha Ha Ha.  The breed of dog they used was beautiful.  I loved the part when Max p**sed on Perrys face.  Spike is so cute.
