QuoteThe iconic film The Goonies is set to receive a sequel 40 years after its original release, with many of the original cast members expected to return.

The production of the movie is scheduled for summer 2025, indicating a potential cinema release in 2026 or 2027. After years of rumours about a possible sequel, the project has finally been given the green light.

An insider revealed: "The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time but it's finally been given the green light to go ahead. The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027."

The focus now turns to the storyline and casting, amid immense pressure to meet the high expectations of fans who will be anticipating a lot from the sequel.

"The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros' know they have to get it totally right. It's likely major stars will come back but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless," the industry insider continued to The Sun.

The source further added that the team working "on the project are so excited," and while "it is early days," the "youth adventure market is on fire, so they want to capitalise on this."

With the original film now 39-years-old, the movie production team hopes to "bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience," and the prospect of achieving this for a new generation "has the team very excited."

The classic 1985 film directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg narrated the captivating tale of a band of friends on a treasure-hunting quest. Living in the 'Goon Docks' area of Astoria, Oregon, they were dubbed the Goonies.

Their slogan, "Goonies never say die," cemented their status as cultural icons. The cast included Sean Astin, who later gained fame as Sam in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, in the role of Mikey, Corey Feldman as Mouth, and Josh Brolin as Mikey's older brother Brand.

Jeff Cohen, now a prominent entertainment lawyer, portrayed Chunk, while Ke Huy Quan, who scooped an Oscar in 2023 for Everything Everywhere All At Once, played Data.

The group experienced the sad passing of former NFL player John Matuszak, who played Sloth, and was known for his line, "Hey you guys!" in 1989.

Do we really want to see a 50 year old man do the truffle shuffle?

The article couldn't even name the correct director of the original movie :bouncegiggle:

the original is one of those classic, 'iconic', culturally revered, nostalgia-creating films that I've never bothered to watch.

for some reason I get the impression it's squarely aimed at kids, rather than kids *and* adults?

I was 17 and already out of its target demographic when it was released, so it has no nostalgia value for me.

It's actually one of Dick Donner's better movies.

the soundtrack is by Dave Grusin, who is without doubt my favourite movie soundtrack composer... and I've still not watched it. will prob check it at some point

also this film is the reason Corey Feldman was only in FRIDAY 13TH PART 5 for a couple of minutes... they wanted him as a main character to carry over from PART 4, but he'd signed on to this instead

QuoteSad news for fans of "The Goonies" as a viral report claiming a sequel to Richard Donner's 1985 classic is in development is not true. At least not at this time. The Sun claimed earlier this month that "The Goonies 2" would be filmed next summer with many of the original cast returning, but actors such as Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton members shut down the report.
"People, there is no 'Goonies 2' script, there is no one 'attached,'" Plimpton wrote on Instagram. "Spielberg is not directing, it's not real. What IS real is CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION AND VOTE!!!!"
Feldman added in a post on X (formerly twitter) that he had "no information" whatsoever that a sequel was in development.
It appears one would have to go back to 2014 for the last time there was serious buzz about "The Goonies 2" being developed. Variety reported at the time that Donner was seeking to reunite the original cast for a sequel, with cast member Sean Astin saying "The Goonies 2" will happen, adding: "I'm 1,000% certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it." Donner passed away in 2021 at 91 years old.

they probably have a load of 70s and 80s movie titles in a hat. every few weeks they pick one out randomly and do a story that it's getting a reboot / sequel / remake... and 99% of the time they're right
