update. stepped outside my front door and there was a butterfly flying around in front of me. wtf  :bouncegiggle: ... quite an unusual looking dark brown one with light brown spots.

I still buy about a dozen a month. on amazon / discogs and in shops... can think of at least 3 or 4 shops that sell them near me

Yeah according to the internet CDs are dead and obsolete. Apparently vinyl outsold CDs in the last decade or so. Walk in stores here have reduced their CD selection over the years though.

the retro market still exists I think. I'm not really buying 'new' CDs, although I think quite a few big new releases still do come out on CD? might be wrong...

my local HMV has a big section.

I miss the days of massive record shops like Tower Records. I could get lost for hours in those places

I still buy CDs and have no problems finding them online. DVDs too, although more new releases are becoming Blu-ray only.
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...

Quote from: Alex on July 17, 2024, 02:43:34 PMIf it helps we still have record players in the UK. They've been increasing in popularity for the past few years.

the HMV here has an entire floor devoted to vinyl. crazy pricey now though. £40 - £50 for albums they have on CD for £6.99...

Ironically since vinyl became more popular it has led to me buying less of it because of the stupid pricing. Even 2nd hand, albums I could have picked up 5 of for £1 are now going for north of £20.

Surprisingly you can still find CDs and vinyls around. I know you can get CDs and vinyls from Walmart and Target, although it's a small selection. I know it's possible to get a record player from Walmart as I was able to get one for my parents for Christmas one year.
yeah no.

hmm not seen any actual record players for sale in ages...

remember the big stereo systems that would have radio, cd, double cassette deck, then vinyl record player on top

I don't even understand the ridiculous price hike. it can't be materials surely.

tbh I have never really owned much vinyl. went through a brief phase of buying it maybe when I was late teens, and some older (80s) albums I wanted hadn't yet been released on CD back then. but was never a vinyl junkie, always preferred tapes then CDs, now also mp3s

I had tons of vinyl back in the late 70's and early 80's. I was young.
I only have about 15 records left. And they're beat to s**t.
I got about 20 45's!

that's another thing about vinyl - so difficult to keep in pristine condition, so easy to scratch / scuff etc.

recently found out my dad has a some cases of '45's from his youth in their attic (which is odd as he's never expressed any interest in music that I can remember)... sadly most Beatles and Stones 7"s aren't as valuable as one may think - I guess everyone of a certain vintage has them lying around somewhere :)

^ I don't think they're very valuable. Never did. I don't collect them for any monetary value.. I bought the 45's because of the cool old wooden fishing box they were in. I just kept them because...I dunno. Nostalgia, I guess. The only thing I have that's old that might be worth a little is old monster magazines and comics and books. Because I like books.

During the apartheid years, cinemas like that could only be found at casinos in places like Sun City, then not part of South Africa.

Metalheads

I rarely see normal bicycles anymore. Seems like everyone has an e-bike now.

Small town movie theaters. There used to be quite a few back in the day, but they died out during the rise of the multiplex in the 1990s.
Is it October yet?

Alex

I still see a lot of metalheads around. Being one helps there I guess. I don't often see punks around though.
