I posted about this obscure slasher once before. A grim reaper type of 'entity' is killing sinners in a small town set in the 1920s.
A Day of Judgment was filmed in 1981, and was released to video in 1983.
It is believed the movie started out as a 'dark' Christian film. The distributor ordered re-shots, as in bloody death scenes, and a more horror-like ending. Still, the movie was never released theatrical.
If anything, it is nicely shot and has decent production values, but the rest is boring as hell.
The Dark Side of Midnight (1986)
Made in 1984, not released until 1986. Vanity project of actor Wes Olsen who produced, directed and played the main character.
PG rated crime thriller about a serial killer hiding in people's closets, wearing a Freddy Krueger sweater, and killing his victims by squeezing their head with his bare hands.
This movie is like watching porn without the porn. The guys have fake mustaches and the acting is hilarious, almost on a Troll 2 level.
^^ just checking this on youtube. classy acting :)
but it looks very 70s... struggling to believe that's 80s?
Copyright in the end credits say 1984, but who knows, maybe it was really made in the 1970s.
I didn't know this was on YouTube. I just watched the opening again for the theme song, 'Creeper/Dark Side of Midnight' and it is giving me David Bowie vibes :buggedout:
The Fear
(https://i.imgur.com/HC82DJll.jpg)
Not very memorable, but it had a nice killer. The guy made out of wood looked pretty cool (although it was a touch too obvious that it was just a suit.) It even got a sequel.
^^
I remember seeing this at the video rental store all the time, but I never watched it.
The Deadly Intruder (1985)
Slasher/Stalker about a small town terrorized by a possibly escaped serial killer. The events unfold in one single night, shifting the focus on a woman alone at home.
This one was boring as I recall. There are a few random killings happening, but for the most part it was really hard to make out anything because almost everything was filmed in almost completely darkness.
There is very little to no suspense, but the film has a decent surprise twist ending. Not the worst ever made, but there are 'better' zero stars rated bad movies out there.

I think this one came up in another thread w/in the past 6 months:

CRINOLINE HEAD....... justly obscure... sort of more a spoof than a straight slasher, though if you are simply looking for "forgotten" and "bad", look no further. Just about as Bad as such things get, iirc from my single watch in the late 90s....... (honestly though I've....... forgotten!)
UNMASKED PART 25 (1988)
British DTV slasher parody. Hockey-masked killer with a blind girlfriend gets tired of the ways of killing. I've never seen it but remember spotting its VHS case at a local mom-and-pop video store.
^^^ interesting... english and I've never heard of this. few clips on youtube, looks a bit 'obvious', but just goes to show the slasher spoof has been a thing for longer than most assume...bandaged head on cover but he wears a voorhees mask really
^^
Another I never rented. Fangoria did an article on Unmasked back in the day, but for some reason I was not sold on it.
I saw it. Wasn't that impressed.
it just doesn't look very funny.
how 'forgotten' is RUSH WEEK (1989)? wasn't on my radar till fairly recently. it's alright, seen worse. but I'd still say it's bad
I'm going to throw THE DEMON in here: largely forgotten but never forgotten if you've ever seen it 😳
Lesser known than the earlier, similar-themed GRADUATION DAY:
FATAL GAMES (1984)
High school gymnasts are offed by a wacko wielding a javelin.

and..
BLOOD FRENZY (1987)
A psychiatrist takes her patients out to the desert for some therapy, where they are stalked by a killer. Lisa Loring, who played Wednesday Addams in the 60s series of THE ADDAMS FAMILY, stars. SOV/DTV.

DEATH SCREAMS/HOUSE OF DEATH (1982)
A fair in a small North Carolina town brings joy to local teens-- until a killer shows up. If you didn't get this at your local mom and pop video store you probably haven't heard of it.
Some good gore in parts to recommend this, otherwise quite the slog from what I hear.

Also:
CARDIAC ARREST (1980)
San Francisco is plagued by murders involving the victims' hearts being surgically removed. Light on the grue, as it's rated PG. Max Gail (BARNEY MILLER) and Fred Ward (TREMORS) are in it.

Video Violence

(man, look at that SUPER Retro Old Fashioned VCR!)
A husband and wife arrive in a small town and open a video store, only to find out the town makes it's own movies, snuff movies!
The writer and director sold the rights to Camp Video because they were the only ones to offer to design video box art and has also claimed the film had a budget of $6. The sequel looks even cheaper and has no actual plot.

The Newlydeads (1988)
Before Joseph Merhi and Richard Pepin founded PM Entertainment, they had a company called City Lights, producing and directing mostly horror movies. The Newlydeads was one of them: the zombified ghost of a transvestite is haunting a honeymoon resort, killing couples in a Friday the 13th manner. Zero budget supernatural slasher that doesn't hold back on the gory stuff. Pretty bad but also kind of fun to watch.
Quoteanother rarely mentioned halloween one, HAUNTEDWEEN (contender for worst wordplay attempt in a horror title ever?)

That would have at least been original.
That would've been a lovely premise to see realized... it could've been a horror-themed sequel to the Insane Clown Posse's cop comedy BIG MONEY HUSTLAS... with Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope fighting for their lives against the Clownslayer. :bouncegiggle:

Play Dead (1985)
Yvonne De Carlo sends her Rottweiler Greta on a deadly mission to eliminate money seeking family members. To my knowledge, the first and only dog slasher. Greta doesn't maul her victims to death, she uses inventive ways to kill. Amazingly bad performance by De Carlo that goes beyond bad.

I'm unsure if it was ever distributed officially or maybe was only available on VHS or DVD @ their shows...? I rec'd a VHS bootleg of it around 2001. John G. Brennan of Jerky Boys and "Family Guy" fame plays the Police Chief. It's delightful. I believe I heard ICP even made a follow-up/second feature that maybe was a western  but have never seen it available to purchase or view anywhere.
staying on a clown theme, CAMP BLOOD (2000)
51 reviews on imdb. so not unheard of but not exactly well known. I'd go along with the 3.1 rating, it was lame. but seems to have spawned a host of sequels
City of Blood is another although it involves politics and an African cult.
PSYCHOS IN LOVE (1987)
DTV black comedy about 2 psychotic killers-- one a killer of women and one a killer of men-- who fall in love and contemplate putting down the knife for a happy life together. Complications arise that prevent this. I've never seen this but one mom and pop video store I frequented had this. One of those "Too Gory For The Silver Screen" Wizard Video releases. Awesome cover!

^^
I own the German Blu-ray. The film is fun, and much better than Dreamaniac (1986) which was another Wizard Video "too gory for the silver screen" release.
PSYCHOS IN LOVE isn't particularly gory but it IS very funny and very well-acted by the "psycho" leads. The director made a handful of other amusing low-budget films. I recommend it!
DRIVE-IN MASSACRE (1976) was an early slasher before the craze of the 80's. It was pretty tame, but of cousrse I seen it on a big box early VHS, so I'm sure it was slashed itself of any grue.

Delusion (1981)
Delusion was at first not necessarily advertised as a "slasher" rather a psychological drama mystery. It was later re-released theatrically with a more straight forward horror themed poster art, and at some point it received a title change in some markets as The House Where Death Lives. They went back to the original title Delusion for its home video debut.
I have really forgotten about this movie until I read that Vinegar Syndrome just released this to Blu-ray. Their review is pretty much spot on from what I remember. It is an extreme slow burner and for the most part doesn't feel like horror or a slasher at all. Either the makers were trying a different approach, or they didn't had a slasher in mind when they made Delusion. The acting is fine, but the film is still not that good. Obviously not your typical slasher flick. I'd like to rewatch this again, though.
Yeah a lot of 'slashers' aren't really slashers are they. Just a convenient pigeon hole a lot of the time. A film like SWEET SIXTEEN falls under slasher but isn't really. It's not just about victims being slashed, it's a whole vibe / style... I have not heard of DELUSION though
DRIVE IN MASSACRE is pretty funny, I remember rewinding one scene where the actor fumbles his lines, and there's a pause

the US poster gives off somewhat slasher vibes, and it has Jamie Lee Curtis in it, but Road Games is not a slasher.
Back in video rental days my mother and me rented everything that looked remotely like horror. Delusion was in the horror section and of course we rented and watched it, but it is not really horror except for a few corpses popping up in the final act. If anything, Delusion is an obscure one.

The Haunted House of Horror (1969)
Frankie Avalon & some teens go to a haunted house. One gets killed, & they decide to investigate themselves. One by one, they're killed off.
Kinda slow proto-slasher, which doesn't really have an ending; it just stops after the killer is revealed.
Also known as Horror House or The Dark, depending on the region.

Visiting Hours (1982): I remember not liking this when I first saw it. I never saw William Shatner in a horror movie before this one 😳

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers :buggedout: :buggedout: :buggedout:
Yeah, I think I've discussed HALLOWEEN V around here before. It ain't the first two but I watched it about 5 years ago - in October, during the Brett Kavanagh hearings - and....... it's aged well! I think it holds up much better than part 4, and specifically as a result of A.) the three sympathetic, well-played female leads and B.) just how relentlessly and despicably mistreated they are by nearly EVERY toxic male onscreen....... including an especially sadistic Michael and even a completely deranged, totally out-of-line Loomis. As a result, I walked away just haaaaaaaating the men and feeling exceptional empathy for the women, and - that's a good look for a circa-'90 slasher or even a slasher today!
I don't think anything in the official HALLOWEEN franchise will ever be 'forgotten'... fairly high profile stuff
Fair point - but I only ever hear or read part 5 get negged, and weirdly part 4 gets perpetually praised. So, critically, 5 seems "forgotten", at least realistically.
I think 4 is completely idiotic after a strong opening. In a genre that is beyond saturated w/ people choosing highly illogical moments to have sex, few sex scenes make as little sense as the one in 4. Just sayin'.
As far as the HALLOWEEN series, for me the only good ones are the first and third. The rest are really lame.
Frankly, I was never a fan of any so called " slasher films". After a while they got repititious and boring.
I can't think of even one FRIDAY THE 13th movie that I really enjoyed more than on a "ho hum" basis.

I really like most of them tbh.
part 6 tries to do the 'self aware' clever, borderline parody thing and is just annoying imo (although many F13 fans say it's their favourite out of the sequels)
the only one I flat out despise is JASON GOES TO HELL.
I rewatched JASON X the other week. holds up pretty well I thought... Jase in space
^ JASON GOES TO HELL was the only one I liked! I mean, the hocky mask s**t was getting old. True, it did rip off the HIDDEN... (a far superior film than any of those combined.)
Quote from: RCMerchant on June 23, 2024, 03:37:38 PM^ JASON GOES TO HELL was the only one I liked!
haha... great minds think unalike, as they nearly say.
I am one of those "fans" who think F13:6 is far and away the best in the series. I also like JASON X mostly unironically. The others all have some guilty pleasure elements but generally I find them pretty dire as "cinema". MANHATTAN has to be the worst. Maybe. It's a close race.
If you feel like you hate slashers (RCM specifically) or hate F13 films particularly, I'll repeat a recommendation from the "Recent Theatrical Viewings" thread: check out IN A VIOLENT NATURE, a far better film than any F13 has ever been or could ever be, as well as (I think) one of the best "slashers" ever made - easily in the original TEXAS CHAINSAW league, if you consider TCM a "slasher".

Junior (1985) aka Hot Water
Not really a slasher, but it has slasher-like moments. And, not really "forgotten" because horror fans always mention this one when it comes to horror never released to DVD or Blu-ray. Junior is a sleazy Canadian terror exploitation flick that should've been made in the 1970s. The VHS was trying to sell it as a Texas Chain Saw kind of movie.
