" Latitude Zero Movie Review
"
"Latitude Zero" is Toho's version of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," and it is a lot of fun. Watching McKenzie and Malic battle is like a game of chess, but with underwater homing missiles, holographic decoy submarines, lasers, rocketpacks, and surgically-created monsters.
I also love Cesar Romero as the nefarious Dr. Malic; he is a cartoon villain played perfectly straight. Any movie featuring a giant, flying lion (with the brain of an Asian woman) is good to go by me.
"Jules Verne never did any of that! Well, not most of that, and that's probably because he was French."
"...who is wearing knee-high boots, a miniskirt, and a gold bikini top. If that's the future of civilian naval medicine, I am going to find a way to get onto a research ship."
"Not that I don't love cleaning the dishes; especially after she burns something, and it's stuck to the pot, and I have to let it soak and then scrub at it..."
"*BANG!* Ah! What are you doing? Stop! Go away! Shoot at somebody else that just got out of the bath!"
Something to watch for: none of the men want Anne to see them naked; the mineral bath must be filled with cold water.
Lesson Learned: Diamonds are a plant's best friend.
Tokyo Shock recently released this movie and "The Legend of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds" on DVD. Both of them are the best versions I have ever seen of either movie.
The deepest dive ever made was by the Trieste in 1960.
Actor Joseph Cotton appeared in more than a hundred films and television shows, everything from "Citizen Kane" to "The Rockford Files." He also played Dr. Vesalius in one of my favorite films, The Abominable Dr. Phibes.
During the podcast, I refer to Dr. Malic's base as "Blood Rock," "Black Rock," and "Blood Island." "Blood Rock" is the correct name; I don't know why I cannot get it right.

Yeah, this movie is great. Definitely one of the better Toho/American ports, and Joseph Cotton rules. If you like the Venture Brothers you'll love Latitude Zero!
Earth is visited by a GIANT ANTIMATTER SPACE BUZZARD! Gawk at the amazingly bad bird puppet, or chuckle over the silly dialog. This is one of the greatest b-movies ever made.
Lesson Learned:
Osmosis: os·mo·sis (oz-mo'sis, os-) n., 1. When a bird eats something.
